I wanted to share something fresh from the studio that’s been quietly glowing away in the background for a reaalllllly long time now—something rooted in myth, science, and the molten heart of the planet.
Meet my latest linocut print: Labyrinth of fire and rock
Isn’t she pretty?
This piece was born from a strange and beautiful place—an old scientific diagram from 1678 by Athanasius Kircher, who imagined the Earth as a living, churning furnace. His vision wasn’t far off from what geophysicists now know: vast magma chambers, subterranean rivers of heat, the planet’s crust shifting like a restless sleeper.
There’s something timeless in that imagery, and something very now. Volcanoes remind us we’re not as solid or settled as we would like to be. It’s all in motion…
I carved this print bit by bit over a year or two, cursing the curves on such a large piece of lino that requires turning it as you go. I channelled that memory and the echoes of Kircher’s world—where science blurred with story and fire explained everything.
But I struggled with finding the right place to print in, the right paper on… The old press I tried just couldn’t cut it on the heavy rag paper and so…

The result is a 41cm x 41cm linocut, hand-printed on wispy, handmade Khadi : Lokta : Nepalese Washi Paper (54 x 54cm, 30gsm).
There are only 20 prints, each hand-pulled, signed, and numbered. When they're gone, that’s it.
Alongside each print, I’m including something extra: a little flash fiction story I wrote while working on the block. It's a piece of myth-making—short, sharp, and volcanic.
If you're interested in grabbing one, they're now live in my Etsy shop.
I’ve been quiet lately—partly lost in this molten world, partly balancing art with the swirl of everything else. But this one felt special enough to send out a flare.
Thanks, as always, for following along. For sharing, for supporting, for reading these quiet dispatches from the edge of the carving table.
Until next time—may your ground stay steady and your fire burn bright.
Love,
Freya
